Cruise Option 2

Sorong – Raja Ampat – Banda Sea – Ambon

12 Days Diving Itinerary by Mermaid I & II

Ambon Sorong01

The most interesting thing about this trip, is diving in 3 completely different areas, Raja Ampat, Banda Sea, and Ambon – and so the biodiversity will be amazing !

Ship: Mermaid 2

Day 1.
Check-in on board MV Mermaid. As guest arrivals take place all through the day depending on flights you are welcome to board when you arrive and spend some time looking around Sorong, gearing up etc. Following the boat and safety briefing – its overnight to the Dampier Strait area.

Day 2-4.
The next 3 days will be spent around the Dampier Strait, the strait between the island of Waigeo, the Bird’s Head peninsula and the northern side of Batanta island. The Dampier Strait is known for the variety of diving, from giant mantas, to mangroves, beautiful reefs, many pinnacles and sea mounts covered in schooling fish, aggregations of sweetlips, schooling barracudas, schools of bumphead parrotfish, massive schools of fusiliers, and lots of wobbegongs sharks. It is also a great location for critters and macro subjects, with several species of pygmy seahorses, and a large variety of nudibranches. There are also several jetties to do some great night dives, where we can see raja epaulette sharks, toadfish, frogfish and crocodilefish.
In the afternoon, between dives, we can visit several traditional Papuan villages, meet the locals and walk in white sandy beaches. Cruise overnight to Misool.
Total 11 dives.

Day 5-6.
The next 2 days will be around the island of Misool, where there literally hundreds of dive sites. Misool is a heaven for wide angle photographers. The prettiest soft corals reefs in the world are located in Misool, as well as having multiple pinnacles surrounded by masses of schooling fish, barracudas, jacks and snappers.
There will be some excursions with the tenders through some amazing inner lagoons, fantastic scenery and wild life sightings.
Cruise overnight to Pulau Koon, Ceram.
Total 7 dives.

Day 7.
Pulau Koon is a small island on the southeast of Ceram, half way between Raja Ampat and the Banda Islands. Walls covered in soft corals, and sandy slopes with hard coral bommies. But the most interesting feature of this island is the amount of schooling fish and pelagic, barracudas, bigeye trevallies, aggregation of red snappers, pompanos, batfish, and giant groupers. Cruise overnight to Manuk.
Total dives 3.

Day 8.
Manuk, an extinct volcano about 65 nm south of the Banda Islands, is one of 2 places in Indonesia where there are huge aggregations of sea snakes, Chinese sea snakes and banded sea kraits. It is an incredible experience to dive surrounded on all sides by sea snakes. The island is surrounded by black sandy slopes with hard coral reefs, volcanic ridges covered in gorgonians with zillions of fusiliers and pelagic fishes such as spanish mackerels and dogtooth tunas passing through.
Cruise overnight to the Banda Islands.
Total dives 4.

Day 9-10.
The next two days will be spent in the Banda Islands, also know in the old days as the Spice Islands. Many of the dive sites around the Bandas are wall dives. Walls covered in massive gorgonians, soft corals, barrel sponges and some very interesting swimthroughs. But there are other attractive dive sites such as pinnacles with enormous groups of schooling pyramid butterflyfish, triggerfish and pelagic fishes such as tunas passing through, spectacular hard coral reefs next to the volcano, and great muck dives with lots of mandarinfish in the local jetty.
The Banda Islands are much more than diving. It is also a cultural and historical experience. We will spend one morning walking around the village of Banda Naira with a local guide, and visit the local museum, the Old Dutch fort, the old colonial governor’s house, the local fish market, and we will have breakfast at a nutmeg plantation.
Cruise overnight to Nusa Laut, Saparua Island, or to Ambon.
Total dives 7.

Day 11.
The last diving day of the trip will be around either the island of Nusa Laut, or in Ambon Bay. Nusa Laut is a small island, next to the island of Saparua, which has some beautiful hard coral fringing reefs as well as walls similar to those of the Banda Islands. Or we will spend the day around Ambon, where there are several options such as wreaks, caves or doing some really interesting muck dives looking for rhynophias, frogfish (including the psycodelic frogfish), harlequin shrimps, and many other critters.
Total dives 2.

Day 12.
08.00am check out time. After breakfat.
We will arrange transfer to the airport or your hotel.

For the reverse trip, Ambon – Sorong, the route is exactly the same. We would start the first day diving around Ambon, and end the trip in the Dampier Strait. So the dive sites will be a day by day reverse of the above itinerary.

World’s Last Paradise, this is the name Raja Ampat archipelago is widely known and called today. It may sound an exaggeration, but not for those who have been there. Raja Ampat archipelago consists of a group of large and small islands, strands of coral reefs, mountains, tropical forests, white sandy beaches and varieties of wildlife making Raja Ampat’s landscape an unmatched beauty.

Located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia’s West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau.

It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua (province) of Indonesia which was formerly Irian Jaya. Some of the islands are the most northern pieces of land in the Australian continent.

raja-ampat-islands-22062-1680x1050
The landscape of Raja Ampat is beautifully crafted like strings of pearls enchanting everyone who sees it. It is really not easy to find the right phrases to describe the beauty. The scenery of Raja Ampat is a natural view which will make your heart tremble, your breath stuck and your skin goose bumps when you look at it. Its beauty will make some of you to shed the tears admiring just how magnificent and merciful Creator giving the natural resources Raja Ampat archipelago.

The Trip:

Set in the heart of the famed Coral Triangle, Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago is an amazing world few travelers ever get to experience. The snorkeling and diving here is world-class, with extravagantly rich coral reefs that support astonishing species—technicolor soft corals, ghost pipefish, tasseled wobbegongs, hawksbill turtles, octopus, eight different species of anemonefish—the diversity is absolutely mind-bending! Topside, you’ll relish a realm of dramatic limestone islands, dazzling aquamarine lagoons, and rare birds—even the red bird of paradise.
Our “mother ship,” a 100-foot Indonesian schooner, makes a comfortable home base, and our evenings are spent in exquisite and remote anchorages savoring the utterly unspoiled beauty of our surroundings.

The Ship:

Our vessel is a double-masted traditional Indonesian sailboat that offers the unique opportunity to explore the incredibly remote, unique, and mystical Raja Ampat archipelago.
The boat was built in Sulawesi in 2000 out of Indonesian hardwoods and is 100 feet long with a 21-foot beam. While not luxurious, she is comfortable and well maintained. The ship is hand-crafted from local hardwoods like Teak and Ironwood. With her 6 jaunty sails, you cut across the remote seas in style and grace.
The ship can accommodates 14 guests in basic cabins that are small but have individually controlled air-conditioning and electricity 24 hours a day. There are no en suite cabins, but there are three shared toilet/shower combinations on the boat. The boat is very sturdy and stable, whether still or under motor. The boat’s crew of seven is attentive, experienced, and helpful, and many have worked on the boat for years.
Note: The boat has steep stairs/ladders from the double cabins up to the main deck (the restrooms and dining room are located on the main deck), so it may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

The ship have also satellite phone, International and local radios, life rafts, life jackets and a crew trained in emergency procedures.

Raja Ampat

This is the final frontier, at the eastern end of Indonesia. Raja Ampat offers amazing diving and the most stunning topside scenery of any dive destination on Earth. This is where Dr. Gerald Allen counted 273 fish species on a single dive.

If you’re looking for unusual sea life like the elusive wobbegong shark, or looking for Birds of Paradise, then a Grand Komodo liveaboard cruise here is for you.

Water temperature: 24 – 29 C. Visibility: 10 – 30 M (seasonal). Year-round diving.

The Essence Of Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is not really about rare critters or seeing sharks, there are generally not as many of what one would call – classic critters or big marine life. What is so special about this area is the scenery and in places the abundance of fish life. Dives where you are inundated with vast schools of fish, on the best of dives fish seem to block out the sun there are so many. Mellow drift dives across the most beautiful coral slopes and channels, unique dives with heavily undercut mushroom shaped islands with gorgeous coral growth virtually to the surface. Some of the best coral gardens we have seen are in this area.

Taking a live-aboard will allow you to see not just these great fish dives but also the topside highlights of this area too. The real “essence of Raja Ampat” is the incredible mix of wonderful topside scenery with great reefs to dive on. Another highlight of this area is taking rides on the tender boat through the most outstanding island scenery of any dive destination anywhere.

About Amed:
The place commonly referred to as Amed isn’t a single town but a string of quaint beachside fishing villages stretching about 10km along the dry and rugged northeastern coast of Bali. Impressive landscapes you will see !
Amed has some good snorkelling areas within metres of the shore. A reef follows the majority of the coastline and is quite close in. Due to the limited number of visitors to the area and a growing conservation awareness among the locals, the sea life is healthy and abundant. There is a small wooden wreck in only 1.5 m of water off Lipah Beach (Amed). And off caus a colourful marine life you can see just by snorkeling.

The Trunyan Village
Trunyan is an original Balinese village. Trunyan is located at the edge of the Lake Batur across Toya Bungkah village. This village can be accessed by boat in 15 minutes sailing from a small harbor at Buahan village (which is located about 4 kms from Penelokan village)
A scenic morning drive direct to Penelokan where a steep winding road leads down to the shores of lake Batur. Motor boats await to take you across the lake to a village strangling on the brink between past and future. Trunyan, due to its isolated position and the secretive nature is a people, has retained its pre-Hindu animist customs and a tradition of primitive ritual and ceremony unique in Bali.
The inhabitants call themselves the ‘Bali Aga’ or ‘Original Balinese’. Here the dead are not cremated, but simply laid out in a ravine not far from the village of the mercy of nature and the elements.
The strange phenomenon is that there is no odour from the dead bodies. The villagers attribute this to the scent of the perfumed ‘menyan’ tree from which Trunyan takes its name – Taru menyan. On the opposite shores if the lake the volcano looms high above the small village of Toya Bungkah, so named for its hot springs that flow into the cold lake waters. In recent years a narrow road has been constructed over the lava connecting this village with the outside world, and the hot springs have become a popular retreat.
